It’s really hard to name Toronto’s best family photo locations but here a few spots that never disappoint. These locations set the tone for fun, adventure and authentic moments while providing a variety of backdrops for the action. Here a a few of my favorite outdoor family portrait locations in Toronto, blending popular client favorites with some hidden gems. If you find picking the perfect spot overwhelming, Reach out and I would love to help you narrow it down.
When you are picking a location for your family portraits, think about places that reflect you family’s personality or hold special meaning to you. For example, if you love hiking, skipping stones into the water and checking out the wildlife, Rouge National Urban Park may be the perfect fit and offer a much different feel than say a trendy coffee shop visit in the Distillery District.
Tucked in the Don Valley, Todmorden Mills offers a perfect blend of nature and history.
With forest trails, historic buildings and open sky to the west for lovely sunset light, Todmorden Mills can be the perfect setting for families looking for timeless family photography. In fall, the vibrant leaves in the valley make this spot even more incredible. The quiet setting let’s your family relax for a picnic, explore and play together all while creating unforgettable photos and memories.
Best For: Families who love history, nature, and peaceful surroundings.
Photo Tip: The rustic stone walls and forest paths create a cozy backdrop perfect for framed wall art or storytelling album spreads.
Get closer to nature at Lynde Shores, just outside Toronto.
If you are a nature loving family, this hidden gem is perfect for you! I has marshlands, wooded trails, open field and wildlife. I’ve seen ducks, geese, chickadees, deer and more here. There is something about golden hour here that can add a magic touch to your photos as well. Kids will love feeding the birds, exploring the trails and more. This can be an amazing place for a winter session as well!
Best For: Nature-loving families who enjoy peaceful outdoor adventures.
Photo Tip: Bring birdseed to attract chickadees, and capture magical, interactive moments of your kids connecting with nature.
East Toronto’s most iconic waterfront destination!
This is just a classic family photo location here in Toronto with sandy shores, a long boardwalk and lovely views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline in the distance. Whether you love, watching the waves roll in, skipping stones or a sunset stroll this spot offers endless opportunities to play and explore.
You can start your portrait session among the beautifully landscaped gardens of Kew Gardens, stroll along the boardwalk, and end at Woodbine Beach for fun, barefoot portraits in the sand.
Best For: Families who love the beach and waterfront adventures.
Photo Tip: Golden hour at Woodbine Beach provides soft, magical lighting that makes your family portraits glow with warmth and authenticity.
Parent Win Tip: You can buy ice cream here.
Escape the city at this peaceful waterfront spot.
Cherry Beach is one of Toronto’s best kept secrets for outdoor family photos. It has driftwood-strewn shores, tall grasses and quiet water views in a protected bay. This location offers a laid back vibe and has a large off-leash dog area, perfect if your furry friend is joining us for the shoot.
Best For: Families looking for a calm, nature-inspired beach setting.
Photo Tip: Catch the sunset along the water for dreamy, golden-hour portraits that feel timeless.
This area is being quickly developed as the portlands grow so it will be interesting to see if it can retain its quiet charm.
Explore Canada’s largest urban park!
Did you realize we had a National Park right in the city? Rouge National Urban park is perfect for families who love to explore and make their session more adventure than photo shoot. Once you enter the park, it feels as though you are nowhere near the big city as you walk through forest trails, wildflower meadows, along winding rivers and marsh. There’s even a beach on Lake Ontario to explore.
During the covid lockdown I spent a lot of time hiking here with the family and exploring the vast park so don’t hesitate to ask me about it!
This is one of Toronto’s best family photo locations to create authentic nature based photo sessions.
A quiet escape right in the city.
Ok I admit I’m a little biased here. This local gem is a mere walk from my front door here in East York so I couldn’t stop myself from including, it as I have spent so much time walking here and enjoying a quick escape from the city. It has a surprising variety of trees, wildlife, bridges and serene creek side views. This has lots of potential for relaxed story-filling portraits. Toronto has a ton of valley’s and ravines with a similar look so don’t hesitate to ask me about other options!
Best For: Families looking for a rustic, nature-filled photo session close to home.
Photo Tip: Use the bridges and wooded paths for a fairytale-like backdrop—especially beautiful in fall when the leaves are bursting with color.
One of Toronto’s most iconic natural landmarks!
Growing up in Scarborough, I always remember my parents taking my brother and I down to Bluffer’s Park to feed the ducks, climb on the rocks and dip our feet in the water. The bluffs over the lake add drama and a cinematic backdrop to your family photos. This area can get very busy so plan ahead to arrive early to find a parking spot. Usually it just starts to quiet down as we start our golden hour family photo sessions here.
Photo Tip: Visit Bluffer’s Park for the perfect mix of beach, cliffs, and forest trails for a variety of stunning shots.
The most personal spot might be closer than you think!
Sometimes the best family photo location is simple where you feel most at home. Your home! Whether inside or out in the backyard, your house can provide the perfect backdrop for deeply personal family photos. A home session works especially well for younger children as they feel most comfortable at home and all their favorite toys and snacks are close by. For a change of scenery a quick walk to a local park makes the perfect addition to your story.
Best For: Families with younger children who want a personal and relaxed session.
Toronto is full of amazing family photo locations that offer fun, adventure, stunning backdrops and more. Whether you love hiking trails, playing at the beach or creating memories in your own backyard I hope these locations will help tell your family’s story in a beautiful and authentic way.
