1. Family sessions are so much fun in the winter

No other season gives you the chance to include snowball fights, sledding, or building snowmen in your family portraits. These activities aren’t just fun—they bring out genuine smiles and laughter, making your photos feel real, playful, and authentic. And guess what? The kids love it!

So let’s get out there and enjoy it! We can make your family portrait session feel more like a fun day out together rather than a formal photoshoot. Some fun ideas to consider:

  • Sled Rides: Bring along a toboggan for a great prop for photos and fun way to move the kids from location to location.
  • Cozy Coffee Shop Moments: Getting cold? Head inside to warm up with hot cocoa at a local café—perfect for intimate, cozy shots.
  • Snowball fights, Snowmen & Snow Angels: These are the timeless classics of winter fun. They make great photos and keep the kids smiling!
  • Winter Picnic: Yes, this is possible! A blanket, some hot cocoa, (or mulled wine wink wink) and you’ve got an untraditional picnic.

2. Winter Provides Stunning Backdrops for Your Family Portraits

It’s amazing what a fresh dusting of snow can do to the parks, fields and trees here in Toronto. It can completely transform the normal everyday backgrounds into a winter wonderland in no time.

If there isn’t snow or your looking for something festive to celebrate the holidays, twinkling holiday lights or seasonal decorations add a warm, magical vibe to your photos. Whether you want a snow covered landscape or cozy indoor scene, winter offers backdrops you won’t find any other time of year.

Some of my favorite locations include:

Lynde Shores – Snow-covered fields, winter birds, and frost-kissed trees create a perfect, tranquil backdrop with variety.

Distillery District – With cobblestone streets and holiday lights, this area has a unique charm—especially during the Christmas season.
(Note: Photo permits required, and it can get crowed, so plan ahead.)

Local Parks – The park down the street from your house can make a cozy, quiet setting for family photos, especially if you’re after a peaceful winter vibe.

3. Winter Light Makes Your Family Photos Shine

Winter light is a photographer’s dream come true. The sun hangs lower in the sky, creating soft, even lighting that flatters everyone and eliminates harsh shadows. Golden hour in winter is particularly stunning, with a cool yet warm glow that adds depth to your photos.

  • Golden Hour: The winter golden hour provides a unique glow that feels both crisp and warm, making your family photos even more beautiful.
  • Cloudy Days: Overcast winter days are perfect for photography! The soft, diffused light ensures flattering portraits without the harsh shadows that come with a bright, sunny day.

This gorgeous winter light is one of the best-kept secrets for capturing stunning, timeless family portraits that highlight your loved ones.

4. Cozy Winter Wardrobes Make Your Family Photos Stylish and cozy

Winter is the best time to get creative with cozy layers. Not only do these outfits add visual interest, but they also keep everyone warm. Bring a jacket you feel comfortable getting photos in as you will probably have it on for at least a few photographs.

  • What to Wear: Think cozy knits, scarves, and boots to create a chic yet practical look. Don’t forget to layer up! This adds both warmth and dimension to your photos.

  • Perfect Color Palettes: Rich tones like forest green, deep red, mustard, and warm neutrals pair beautifully with the winter scenery, ensuring you look great in your photos.

Winter wardrobe choices should be stylish yet also warm an comfortable. You don’t want to look frozen!

5. Winter Family Portraits Offer Big Perks

Winter might be the “off-season” for family portraits, but that’s actually a huge advantage. Here are a few reasons why winter is a fantastic time to book your family photoshoot:

Plus, with fewer events crowding your calendar, it’s easier to find a date that works for your family. Winter’s slower pace lets you relax and enjoy the process, creating a stress-free experience.

  • Fewer Crowds: Popular locations are quieter in the winter, which means we’ll have more space to capture your family’s moments without the distraction of large crowds.

  • Flexible Scheduling: With fewer events happening, it’s easier to find a time that works for everyone—giving you a stress-free experience. And with no need to stay up late for golden hour, it won’t interfere with the children’s bedtime.

  • Special Deals: Since winter is typically a slower season, if you reserve your session in January or February I’ll give you $100 off your creative session fee!

Winter’s slower pace means you get more flexibility, less stress, and better deals—all while still capturing gorgeous photos.

Waiting for the “perfect time” to book family photos often leads to missed opportunities. Your family is perfect right now, in this chapter, with all the quirks and chaos that make you unique. Whether it’s documenting your kids’ toothless smiles or the way you all fit together on the couch, family photos are a way to preserve those fleeting moments.

Stay Warm & Comfortable (With Some Smart Planning)

Concerned about the cold? Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! By planning ahead, we can ensure that everyone stays warm and cozy throughout your winter photoshoot. Here’s how we make it work:

  • Layering Up: Dress in layers—this not only keeps you warm, but it also adds visual interest to your photos.
  • Smart Clothing Choices: Don’t shy away from wearing cozy, weather-appropriate items like knit hats, mittens, scarves, and boots. (Trust me, wet socks in the snow are no fun!)
  • Cozy Locations: We can choose spots with natural windbreaks like trees to help shield you from the cold.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Mix: If you’re not keen on staying outside for long, we can easily split the session between a winter outdoor adventure and cozy indoor moments, like snuggling by the fireplace or sharing hot cocoa.

With careful planning, your winter session will be as comfortable as it is beautiful

FAQs About Winter Family Portraits

What if there’s no snow on the day of our session?

No snow? No problem! Winter landscapes are still beautiful, with frosty branches, soft light, and the season’s natural stillness. We can also focus on indoor settings or incorporate holiday decor to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Plus, Toronto weather can be unpredictable—we’ll have a backup plan just in case!

Keeping kids happy and comfortable is a priority. We’ll keep the session active and fun with snowball fights, sled rides, or running around to keep them warm. Hand warmers and quick warm-up breaks are also helpful. If needed, we can plan part of the session indoors or keep it shorter to match their comfort level.

Safety and comfort always come first! If there’s extreme cold, heavy snow, or unsafe conditions, we’ll reschedule for a day that works better. I keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session and will communicate with you to ensure we have the best possible experience.

Definitely! A blend of indoor coziness and outdoor beauty can give you the best of both worlds. We can start with snowy scenes outside and then move indoors for warm, intimate shots by the fireplace or near holiday decorations.

I hope my 5 reasons above show you why winter offers a unique charm—snow-covered landscapes, cozy indoor vibes, and fewer crowds at popular spots. Plus, the soft lighting and serene atmosphere are perfect for capturing heartfelt moments with your family. It’s also a slower season, meaning I can offer more flexible scheduling and exclusive perks (ask me for details!).
